3D Printer Purpose & Policy

  • Students may request one complete model per trimester, if the form is open (i.e. all parts of skull, all vertebrae, etc.)

  • The 3D printer is to be used for educational and research purposes only. 

  • Printing of educational and/or research objects is free of charge. 

  • Only Library staff and faculty have hands-on access to the 3D printer. 

  • The Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request for any reason. 

  • Printing requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please allow several weeks for items to be printed.  Models not picked up within 10 days will become the property of the library.   

  • Unless otherwise requested, the Library may photograph 3D printed creations for promotional purposes. 

  • Logan’s 3D printer may only be utilized for lawful purposes. Patrons are not permitted to use the 3D printer to create material that is: 

    • Prohibited by local, state, or federal law

    • Prohibited by Logan University policy 

    • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or pose an immediate threat to the well-being of others.  No object that may function as a weapon or part of a weapon will be printed 

    • Obscene or otherwise inappropriate 

    • In violation of copyright, patent, or trademark protection

We apologize for the inconvenience, but due to a rapid increase in requests, we placed a pause on new requests temporarily.

This will give us the opportunity to complete our existing requests. Our goal is to reopen the form again soon. We will announce on our Instagram (@loganulibrary) when we reopen the form. Thank you for your understanding.

How much does it cost to get a 3D print?

  • It's free for Logan students, faculty, and staff! The 3D printer is to be used for educational and research purposes only. Visit this guide for more information or to place a request.

How long does it take to get a 3D print?

  • 3D printing can take considerable time. Please be patient and expect your print to take up to a few months. We print based on time to complete, filament availability, printer functionality, and list order. We do not print solely on order of list due to the timing of prints. This means someone who requested after you may get their model before you. Additionally, printers often experience issues and require repair and maintenance. 

 

How will I know when my 3D print is ready for pickup?

  • We will send you a Logan email when your print is ready for pick up. You will have ten days to pick it up. After that time, it will be forfeited and you will need to make a new request.

 

I received my 3D model; do I need to do anything with it?

  • When you first receive a 3D-printed model, it is ready to use right away. However, you may notice that some areas of the model are blocked by a white, semi-transparent material. This material is used for printing purposes and can be removed by submerging the model in cold water for at least a day. During this time, the material will dissolve, leaving the rest of the model intact.

    It is important to note that if you have a hand model, some of the fingers may become detached during this process. But don't worry, they can easily be reattached using super glue.

 

 

3D Printed Skull Drawing

Use the link below to enter our monthly drawing for a skull model.

Each month, the library will randomly select a name from the entrants to win a 3D printed skull. The winner will be contacted via Logan University email and will be able to select the material color.

You can only enter once per month. Your entry is only for the current month. You will need to enter again for subsequent months. You may only win one skull.

Printed Object Requirements and Limitations

  • 3D prints must be in STL (stereo-lithography) file format. 

  • The library can print up to 13 x 9.4 x 11.8-inch models. Larger models may be broken into smaller pieces for printing. 

  • Unless otherwise requested, STL files provided by the patron may be stored in the library's database of STL files for use by the library or other patrons.
