Open Educational Resources: Adopt

Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible, openly licensed academic materials.

Steps to Adoption

  1. Review the Materials - Many open textbooks have been peer-reviewed by faculty, so you many want to use these reviews to help narrow down your choices.
  2. Modify if Necessary - After evaluating the materials, you can determine if you will need to modify the OER to meet your instructional needs.  See the box on the right for more information on modifying open textbooks.
  3. Attribution of OER - Creative Commons licenses require that the user attribute the original creator or copyright holder. If you plan to use any CC-licensed materials, make sure you are providing proper attribution.
  4. Curriculum Approval - Submit your proposed OER materials to the curriculum committee for review and approval.
  5. Delivery of OER to Students - The simplest way to delivering OER to students is to provide a link for them to view or download the resource.  If the publisher offers printing services, you may be able to work with the bookstore to offer low-cost printed copies to students, as well.
